NON-SURGICAL SPINAL DECOMPRESSION

Non-surgical spinal disc decompression is a non-invasive treatment for acute and chronic spinal pain associated with stenosis, herniated, ruptured, bulging or degenerative discs. It is safe and effective without the normal risks associated with invasive procedures such as injections, anesthesia or spinal surgery.

Spinal decompression works through a series of 15 one minute alternating cycles – a decompression cycle (using a logarithmic decompression curve) and relaxation a cycle. The total treatment time is approximately 30 minutes.

During the decompression phase, the pressure in the disc is reduced and a vacuum type of affect is produced on the disc. This increases the Nucleus Pulposis’s (inner nucleolus of the disc) ability to use oxygen and nutrition. The decompression or traction causes the oxygen and nutrition to be diffused into the disc allowing the Annulus Fibrosis (the outside hard cartilaginous tissues) to heal.

What are the benefits of Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Performance Care patients move in the direction of optimal overall health and have a longer, healthier, happier, more fulfilled life as the result. Decompression therapies have been used to treat disc injuries in the neck and low back. This procedure gently separates the vertebrae from each other which creates a vacuum inside the individual discs that are identified as the problem areas. The negative pressure may induce the retraction of the herniated disc into the inside of that disc, thereby moving it away from the nerve root. The movement is microscopic with each treatment, but over four to six weeks the ending result is significant.

Over a series of visits, the cycles of decompression encourage the diffusion of water, oxygen and fluids from outside the discs to inside. These fluids help to heal the damaged or torn disc fibers.

Non-surgical spinal decompression has proven successful at treating the following conditions:

  • bulging discs

  • herniated discs

  • pinched nerves

  • sciatica

  • radiating arm pain

  • degenerative disc disease

With non-surgical spinal decompression, the patient now has an option to alleviate the neck and back pains that they typically experience after a disc injury.  These pains can also be present in a patient who is experiencing degeneration of the disc.

Non-surgical decompression therapy can also alleviate the pain associated with a pinched nerve.  Usually caused by spinal misalignment (subluxation), the pinched nerve (neural impingement) can cause a patient pain that can dramatically impact their ability to carry on their day-to-day activities.

Back surgery can be an expensive procedure and may not offer the best chances for correction.   Prior to back surgery, and as an alternative to the procedure, patients have found positive results through Decompression Therapy.

Let’s take a minute and discuss what the surgery would be like for most patients.   In a typical situation, in a lumbar decompression surgery (“lumbar” means lower spine, the area between the lowest rib and the pelvis), a piece of bone is removed to give the nerve root more space to heal correctly.

While these surgeries are often successful, they can also be very expensive and carry several significant risk factors. First, in any major surgery, there is risk of infection, extensive blood loss, or blood clotting.   However, from time to time, complications from the surgery can and do arise.  When this unfortunate event occurs, it can sometimes cause the nerve itself to be further damaged.  Other considerations during surgery can include, depending on the individual, the potential for a patient to suffer an allergic reaction to the anesthesia that’s administered prior to the surgery.
